Every year on 3 November, the UAE flag is raised at the same moment across all seven emirates. Homes, schools, offices and landmarks fill with red, green, white and black as citizens and residents come together to celebrate the symbol that unites the nation.

In 2026, Flag Day falls on Tuesday, 3 November, with the nationwide flag-raising at 11am. Here is everything you need to know about the day, the story behind the flag and what its colours mean.

What Is UAE Flag Day?

UAE Flag Day was first celebrated in 2013 following an initiative by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

The date marks the anniversary of the late Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan taking office as President of the UAE on 3 November 2004.

Flag Day is not a public holiday. It is a regular working day, and government entities, schools, companies and families take part by raising the flag together at 11am.

The Story of the UAE Flag

The UAE flag was designed in 1971 by Abdullah Mohammed Al Maainah, a young Emirati who won a national design competition announced in Al Ittihad newspaper.

The flag was raised for the first time on 2 December 1971 by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the Founding Father, on the day the Union was declared.

What Do the Colours of the UAE Flag Mean?

The colours are inspired by a line of Arabic poetry by Safi Al Din Al Hilli, and are often explained as follows:

  • Red: courage, strength and sacrifice.
  • Green: growth, prosperity and the land.
  • White: peace and honesty.
  • Black: strength of mind and determination.

How the UAE Celebrates Flag Day

  • Flag-raising ceremonies at 11am in government entities, schools and companies across the country.
  • Landmarks and buildings lit up in the colours of the flag.
  • Homes, balconies and cars decorated with the national flag.
  • Community events that bring citizens and residents together.

Respecting the UAE Flag

The UAE flag guidelines ask everyone to treat the flag with respect:

  • Keep the flag clean, ironed and in good condition.
  • Replace any flag that is torn, faded or discoloured.
  • Check the flag after storms or harsh weather.
  • When not in use, fold it neatly and store it properly.
  • Never insult or deliberately damage the flag; doing so is a criminal offence under UAE law.

Flag Day and the UAE’s Growth Story

Flag Day is also a reminder of how far the country has come since 1971. From a young federation to one of the world’s most dynamic economies, the UAE has built safe, modern cities that attract families, professionals and investors from around the world.

In Abu Dhabi, that growth can be seen in communities such as Saadiyat Island, Yas Island and Al Reem Island, where world-class infrastructure, culture and lifestyle come together. It is one of the reasons the capital continues to be a trusted place to live and invest.
